South Park Ridicules Brett Kavanaugh, Roseanne, The Simpsons
South Park has a lot on its plate these days in terms of cramming so much news and pop culture developments into 22 minutes of satire, and this week, they did what they could by taking on Brett Kavanaugh, Roseanne Barr and so much more.
The Problem With a Poo focused on Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo, who might not be allowed to direct South Park’s annual holiday pageant because the townspeople are demanding accountability for the “offensive tweets” he wrote about them in the past. When Hankey appears before court to face questions about his conduct, he stumbles through his testimony while claiming he came up with his “bad jokes” while under the influence of Ambien.
The episode made numerous clear references to Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who had to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee weeks ago when multiple sexual misconduct accusers threatened to derail his eventual confirmation to the Supreme Court. At the same time, Hankey’s Ambien excuse draws parallels to Roseanne Barr’s explanation for the racist tweet she wrote about Valerie Jarrett months ago. It was that tweet that caused ABC to fire Barr from her revived self-titled sitcom.
Hankey ends up getting cast out of South Park by the end of the episode, forcing him to find a new place to live. The show ends up taking a shot at The Simpsons by showing Hankey in Springfield, where he’s met by Apu among other staple characters from that continuity.
The inclusion of Apu is particularly interesting since he was the main subject of “The Problem with Apu,” a documentary from last year that explored Apu’s character as a racist stereotype.
