The Internal Revenue Service’s admitted targeting of conservative groups for additional tax status scrutiny is not just grounds for agency employees losing their jobs, but it should lead to the jailing of some government workers, House Speaker John Boehner said Wednesday morning.
“The IRS has admitted to targeting conservatives, even if the White House continues to be stuck on the word ‘if,'” Boehner said during a Capitol Hill presser with fellow House Republicans. “Now my question isn’t about who’s going to resign. My question is: Who’s going to jail over this scandal?”
The strong words of condemnation came as Boehner continued: “There are laws in place to prevent this type of abuse. Someone made a conscious decision to harass and hold up these requests for tax-exempt status. I think we need to know who they are and whether they violated the law.”
“Clearly someone violated the law,” he concluded.
This comes after a Tuesday report from the IRS inspector general reported that the tax collecting agency used “inappropriate criteria” as a means to deliberately target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status under the current tax code.
