On Wednesday, Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey announced that 28-year-old George Zimmerman has been charged with second degree murder. Zimmerman has been at the center of a media frenzy after shooting 17-year-old Miami teen Trayvon Martin in a Sanford, Florida neighborhood in late February, with Martin’s family, media figures, demonstrators, and myriad supporters publicly calling for his arrest. Zimmerman, she confirmed, is currently in custody.
Corey shared that the decision was not made “lightly,” nor was it influenced by “public pressure.” She later stressed the difficulty in reaching the “right” conclusion in difficult homicide investigations. “We will continue to seek the truth throughout this case,” she added.
CNN has also reporting that Zimmerman has a new lawyer today, Mark O’Mara. His former attorneys — Craig Sonner and Hal Uhrig — withdrew as his legal counsel after they became unable to contact Zimmerman.
