Spicer: Nothing to Suggest Trump Jr.’s Russian Lawyer Meeting Wasn’t About Adoption

Sean Spicer returned to the White House press podium after his extended absence, and he faced the ongoing questions shrouding Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Russian lawyer.

When the details about Trump Jr.’s meeting first came to light, his team insisted the meeting revolved around adoption policies and had nothing to do with his father’s presidential campaign. Trump Jr. changed his story multiple times throughout the ongoing development, but today, the Press Secretary reverted to Trump Jr.’s original defense when he was asked about the matter.

“I will say that it’s quite often for people who are given information during the heat of the campaign to ask what that is. That’s what simply he did, the President’s made it clear through his tweet, and there was nothing as far as we know that would lead anyone to believe that there was anything except for a discussion about adoption and the Magnitsky Act. But I would refer you back to counsel for that.”

According to the email’s released by the president’s son, Trump Jr. was asked to meet with Natalia Veselnitskaya under the pretext of learning sensitive information about Hillary Clinton from the Russian government. Trump Jr. wrote “I love it” when he accepted the proposed offer, and he brought several of his father’s campaign staff to attend the meeting with him.

Trump defended his son on Twitter earlier today, saying “most politicians” would have taken the meeting if there was chance to learn about opposition research to help improve their chances to win.
