Last week, the president of the European Commission criticized President Trump in an interview with the Financial Times. Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker expressed his concerns with how positively Trump has spoken of Brexit, which officially began today.
He said Trump was “giving the impression he is not interested in European affairs,” and relayed that he warned Vice President Mike Pence about the consequences of the EU collapsing, and even went so far as to say that Trump “does not understand anything about Europe.”
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer swatted down the charge during Wednesday’s press briefing. “I think the president is very well steeped in world affairs, especially Europe, NATO, all of the issues. He was a leader in the effort to call Brexit.”
Trump spoke positively about Brexit following the vote last year, and he subsequently remarked that people would soon be calling him “Mr. Brexit.” He also predicted shortly before election day that his victory would be “Brexit plus plus plus.”
