State Dept Spox Caught on Hot Mic Admitting ‘Ridiculous’ Talking Point

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki got caught on a hot mic this week admitting one of her own lines about Egypt was “ridiculous.” Reporter Matt Lee asked for the State Department’s reaction to a court dropping all charges against former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, who was accused of overseeing the killing of demonstrators during the Arab Spring.

Psaki said, “Generally, we continue to believe that upholding impartial standards of accountability will advance the political consensus on which Egypt’s long-term stability and economic growth depends.”

Lee was actually a bit taken aback at how broad that statement was. At one point he said, “What you said says nothing. I mean, it’s like saying, ‘Well, we support the right of people to breathe.”

When Psaki wrapped the presser, she admitted, “That Egypt line is ridiculous.”

Psaki later emailed this statement to ABC News about the hot mic moment:

“It’s just the latest scientific evidence of global warming: now we have to worry about hot mics. But as Secretary Kerry reminded me, I’m in good company in this administration.”
