Stelter: Regardless of Election, Trump’s Already ‘Won His Campaign Against the Media’
CNN’s Brian Stelter recapped Donald Trump‘s year-plus war against the media today, saying that no matter what happens on Tuesday, Trump has “already won his campaign against against the media.”
How can this be? Distrust of the media has grown higher and higher over the past year, especially with Trump fanning the flames at all of his rallies against news outlets and individual reporters.
“Let’s call this what it is,” Stelter said. “The most extreme anti-media talk we have ever heard from a modern presidential candidate.”
He went through how Trump has “sought to strip the press of legitimacy, of credibility” by raging against the “dishonesty” of almost every single major media outlet.
So whether or not Trump wins, Stelter concluded, “this is the ugly new normal” and the public’s relationship with the press will never be the same again.
Stelter then brought on media critic David Zurawik and CNN’s Dylan Byers to break down Trump’s war with the media and the media’s own failings during the campaign. Zurawik said there was a failure to give Americans “trustworthy, verified information,” while Stelter said there was quite a bit of “isolated stupidity.”
