Stephanopoulos Apologizes On-Air for Not Disclosing Clinton Foundation Donations
This morning, George Stephanopoulos formally apologized on Good Morning America for failing to disclose his donations to the Clinton Foundation while reporting on the Clintons and/or their Foundation, and saying that personally donating to that foundation in particular was a “mistake.”
The Washington Free Beacon reported yesterday that the ABC News anchor had made about $75,000 in donations to the foundation, run by former president Bill Clinton and wife, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Stephanopoulos confirmed this information to Politico, and in this morning’s statement, added that he’d publicly made the donations to “stop the spread of AIDS, help children, and protect the environment in poor countries.”
But that being said: “I should have gone the extra mile to avoid even the appearance of a conflict,” he ceded in a live segment. “I apologize to all of you for failing to do that.”
Stephanopoulos is famously also a former Clinton staffer and communications director, but regularly discloses that fact before reporting on Clinton activities. As a result of this news, he has recused himself from moderating any 2016 presidential debates.
