Stephanopoulos to Stewart Last Month: People Give to Clinton Foundation with Hope for Returns

In light of all the controversy surrounding ABC This Week moderator George Stephanopoulos‘ failure to disclose his donations to the Clinton Foundation, here’s an interesting flashback: Just a few weeks ago, Stephanopoulos appeared on The Daily Show to discuss the Clinton family’s charitable organization and 1) Did not mention his own donations; and 2) Conceded that some people give to the foundation with some expectation of quid pro quo.

Libertarian legal blogger Popehat spotted the clip, which is sure to raise some eyebrows in retrospect:

In the April 28 clip, which we covered upon first airing, Jon Stewart asked the former Clinton adviser-turned-TV-anchor about “Foreign donors that might have given to the Clinton Global Initiative and then there might been favors done at the State Department and it might been to the tune of, I think, some millions of dollars.”

“This is a tough one,” Stephanopoulos said. He pushed back on Peter Schweizer‘s Clinton Cash allegations because they contained “no direct evidence of action taken on behalf of the donors.”

However, he added, “everybody also knows when those donors give that money… there’s a hope that that’s going to lead to something and that’s what you have to be careful of.”
