On Monday night, Stephen Colbert mocked House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) for his reaction to the late night host’s visit to Capitol Hill last week where he released his own “memo.”
The Late Show host had some fun at the expense of the congressman when he passed around copies of a memo that said, “Devin Nunes is a [REDACTED].” But Nunes made it clear over the weekend that he didn’t find it funny.
“I think this is the danger we have in this country, this is an example of it” Nunes told Neil Cavuto. “The left controls not only the universities in this country but they also control Hollywood in this country and the mainstream media.”
“He took the bait!” Colbert reacted.
He took exception to Nunes’ claim that he “didn’t know” whether Colbert reached out to him or not during his visit to Capitol Hill, showing a clip of him popping into Nunes’ office to drop off a copy of his memo, which he handed to the staff.
“So either your staff didn’t tell you that I charged into your office… or you’re not telling the truth,” Colbert said to Nunes. “So is Devin Nunes a liar? Not that I know of!”
Colbert sarcastically called Nunes a “good sport” when the congressman said he “enjoys” the attacks.
“Great, because we’ve got shows all week,” Colbert reacted.
He then played clips from his interview with House Intelligence Committee ranking member Adam Schiff (D-CA) that didn’t make the original segment, including when he asked if it was “ironic” that Nunes is the head of the “intelligence” committee.
