Stephen Colbert Makes Cameo in The Hobbit, Presumably Gets Eaten by Smaug
Many media followers know that fake news pundit Stephen Colbert is, quite possibly, the biggest fan of J.R.R. Tolkien in the entirety of existence, ever. Want proof? Director of The Hobbit Peter Jackson said so. In fact, a few years ago, he invited Colbert and his family to New Zealand to film a secret cameo for the newly-released part two of the trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug.
And now we can see the fruits of Colbert’s three-decade-old obsession, as an actual, IMDB.com-credited, man of Laketown, spying with his family (wife Evelyn McGee and sons Peter and John Colbert) on the dwarves as they plan to retake the Lonely Mountain from the evil dragon Smaug.
Perhaps it’s befitting for Colbert to be portrayed a grubby, filthy man of Lake-Town, but would it not have been more appropriate for him to appear on the back of an Eagle, perhaps the mighty King of Eagles Gwaihir, into the Battle of the Five Armies, to smite the bands of goblins and wargs alongside Bard the Bowman? Come on, Peter Jackson. Respect the man who knew Tolkien better than your own lore-master. Colbert is literally a human Istar, brought to earth by Eru Iluvatar to show the descendants of the Edain the path of the Light, and away from the shadows of Mordorbamacare. Show some respect.
Anyway, here’s a giant split-screen photo of Colbert doing some real-world LARPing. Nerd.
