Steve Doocy: ‘Kinda Weird’ Republicans Are ‘Doing a 180’ After Calling to Ban TikTok for a Long Time

Steve Doocy flatly said what a lot of people have been thinking of late over long time congressional calls to ban TikTok, hitting Republicans along the way.

At issue? A House vote on Wednesday on a bill designed to crack down on TikTok, the Chinese-owned social media app. Like every other app, TikTok collects behavioral data for its algorithm, which it uses to very effectively serve videos to the users, much to their delight and, at times, addiction.

TikTok is owned by a Chinese company, ByteDance, which has led to concern that data could be used by a foreign entity, or at least that has long been the argument by mostly Republican members of Congress. However, former President Donald Trump recently changed his position on an outright ban on TikTok, and now Congress is seeking a wholesale divesture from China, which seems unlikely.

The Heritage Foundation’s Tech Policy Center Director, Karen Frederick, joined Doocy on Fox & Friends Wednesday morning. She noted that the bill “sailed out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee 50 to 0 last week,” which she called “remarkable,” before analyzing the bill at hand.

“All this bill does is ask ByteDance to sever ties with the Chinese Communist Party and allow TikTok to become an American company,” Frederick flatly said, as though asking for a company to simply change ownership is an easy thing to expect. “And if it doesn’t, then it faces a prohibition on app stores and web hosting services,” she added, perhaps unaware that she was arguing for the very censorship from “Big Tech” that many heard from the right during the Trump administration.

“The choice is clear cut your ties with the CCP, and you can continue to operate as normal,” the Heritage Foundation staffer said. “We should be able to keep the Chinese Communist Party out of the pockets of our children. Simple as that.”

“Well, absolutely,” Doocy agreed, before calling out the apparent flip-flop. “And a bunch of Republicans have been for a ban or for divestiture for a long time. So it’s kind of weird that they’re doing a 180. You know, ultimately it will probably pass the house. The big question is if it is ever brought up to the Senate.”
