It has been a very moving and very special day in Newark, with amazing eulogies and songs and an unbelievable amount of emotion, but the legendary Stevie Wonder‘s two performances may have been the greatest and most powerful moments of the service. Wonder provided some words of departure, beginning with a thankful prayer to God for having lived to see Whitney Houston, following it up with two songs.
“Praise God for allowing me to be in life at the same time as Whitney,” he said to applause, admitting somewhat bashfully that, “in my little fantasy world, I had a little crush on Whitney,” and that in coming to perform he prayed for the words to sing along with his music that would give Houston the correct sendoff– “God, give me some words that I can say relevant to where we are and what is to be said.” He then put on an amazing performance, playing two songs with lyrics about how the media could never tear her down and the greatness of her talent.
