Jon Stewart appeared on Capitol Hill today with a big group of 9/11 first responders to lobby on behalf of renewing legislation to ensure they keep getting their health benefits. It’s an issue Stewart is particularly passionate about, and today, when he spoke on Capitol Hill, he first turned to the first responders and apologized.
Stewart said he’s “embarrassed for our country” and for New York that the brave individuals who put themselves into harm’s way to save others have to be in D.C. today to “convince people to do what’s right for the illnesses and difficulties you suffered.”
He praised and thanked them on a deeply personal level, but also told them to be ready for what they might face within the halls of Congress.
“Today, on the hill,” Stewart said, “you will be exposed to possibly toxic levels of bullshit and arrogance.”
Stewart was not just surrounded by those very first responders, but by various members of Congress all supporting the renewal of the health care law.
