Surgeon General: We Don’t Need Federal Mandate for Vaccinations

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said in a CNN interview today that he doesn’t currently support the idea of a federal mandate on vaccinations, after days of vaccines and measles outbreaks being in the news. Murthy has not jumped onto the national stage amid this new public health issue, but he has been discussing vaccines and other issues in a cross-country listening tour.

In clips aired on The Lead today, Dr. Sanjay Gupta asked Murthy about his views on mandating vaccines. Murthy said, “I don’t necessarily believe that we are at a stage where we need a federal mandate where it comes to vaccinations.”

He did say he objects too a too-permissive expanded exemption process, and made it abundantly clear that people shouldn’t be listening to all the “misinformation” that’s going around about vaccines, like the discredited claim that vaccines have a direct link to autism in children.
