At tonight’s CNN Republican debate, Jake Tapper confronted Donald Trump about the criticism that he has received for “praising authoritarian dictators.”
Trump has repeatedly referred to Vladimir Putin, favorably, as a strong leader. And years ago, in talking about the Tiananmen Square massacre, Trump said, “When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength.”
Trump insisted that comment didn’t “mean I was endorsing it,” clarifying that Tiananmen Square was a “horrible thing.” He also said it’s just a fact Putin is a “strong” leader.
Tapper pointed out that people consider what Putin does and what China did in Tiananmen Square to be atrocities.
Trump insisted, “I don’t say that in a good way or a bad way, I say that as a fact.”
