Tapper Blasts GOP For ‘Secret Society’ Talk: ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Inquisition’
The media has been all over the GOP today for Sen. Ron Johnson’s magnification of a text message exchange between FBI lawyer Lisa Page and senior agent Peter Strzok that mentioned a “secret society.” Johnson, along with Sean Hannity and others, suggested this proved that the “deep state” had it in for President Donald Trump. Later, however, the text message was shown to be just a joke.
CNN’s Jake Tapper piled on the Republicans for taking the notion of a “secret society” in the FBI seriously this afternoon.
Tapper acknowledged that the pair’s seeming bias against then-candidate Trump did “raise questions” but, ultimately, the fact that Strzok was removed from the Russia investigation upon discovery of the text messages proves that the FBI is following the letter of law.
Afterwards, he began blasting the GOP for taking one text message, the one that mentioned a “secret society,” seriously, in light of the fact that context had yet to be revealed.
“A funny thing happened on the way to the inquisition,’ he said. “The whole message came out and it seemed possibly to be just a joke.”
Tapper noted that the calendar referenced by Page to Strzok in the “secret society” text exchange was a gag gift, featuring pictures of Vladimir Putin.
“A good lesson for everyone: Democrats, Republicans, the media,” he said. “When it comes to this investigation, indeed when it comes to everything, stick to the facts of what we know. Credibility is a valuable and fragile commodity.”
