Tapper on Trump Intervening in Case of Green Beret Charged With Murder: He’s ‘Just Going by What He Saw’ on Fox
President Donald Trump said yesterday he plans to get involved in the case of a Green Beret after watching a segment on Fox News.
Major Matt Golsteyn has been charged with premeditated murder in the killing of a suspected Taliban bomb-maker. Amid all the media coverage of the charges, yesterday the President tweeted this:
At the request of many, I will be reviewing the case of a “U.S. Military hero,” Major Matt Golsteyn, who is charged with murder. He could face the death penalty from our own government after he admitted to killing a Terrorist bomb maker while overseas. @PeteHegseth @FoxNews

CNN’s Jake Tapper covered the news on The Lead today, asking Jim Sciutto why the President would involve himself in it. The answer, as Sciutto said, was Fox News.
Sciutto’s report noted the problem of Trump’s comments potentially “unduly influenc[ing]” the entire case.
As Tapper discussed the matter with his panelists, he emphasized the importance of this entire process and called out the President for jumping in after watching TV:
“This is another instance of the President Trump seeing a report on Fox News, not finding out more about it, just going by what he saw, what he picked up, and then changing policy or trying to change policy or inserting himself in policy. I’ve heard some people say we shouldn’t really worry about state-run media, it’s media-run state that’s the concern.”
