Tapper to Ferguson Guest: Officer May Not Be Charged, How Will You Stem Violence?
Jake Tapper spoke today with local Missouri alderman Antonio French about the likelihood that Officer Darren Wilson will not be charged in the death of Michael Brown. And Tapper asked what exactly activists will do to stem any potential violence or rioting from people angry with the verdict.
One activist group is requesting that police give a 48-hour heads-up about a grand jury decision and that they calm down about more minor infractions like people throwing water bottles at police. Tapper challenged that second one a bit, but French argued the concern here is about the police overreacting like they did back in August, when tensions were at their highest.
Tapper then told French it’s a likely scenario at this point that Wilson won’t be brought up on charges and asked what he and others will do to calm down tensions. French didn’t completely accept the premise, saying he still holds out hope that Wilson will be charged so they’ll be able to go through all the evidence in the trial.
