A lot of attention has been focused on President Donald Trump’s cryptic “calm before the storm” remarks that he delivered during a White House photo-op last night. When asked about the comment this afternoon, the president told reporters — with a wink — that they’ll “find out” what he meant.
At the top of CNN’s The Lead this afternoon, anchor Jake Tapper unleashed a bit of snark while referencing the president’s comments.
“Did he mean war?” Tapper wondered. “Was he just making a joke? Was he doing the old ‘Look, a squirrel!’ thing?”
He continued, “The Commander-in-Chief surrounded by his generals teases that it is the calm before the storm. What does that mean? And how unsettling might US troops and their families find those comments?”
The CNN host went on to recap Trump’s remarks, his and his press secretary’s refusal to clarify them, and additional statements the president has directed at the military. He would then go on to read comments provided to him from a senior national security official who stated that Trump has a “cartoon image” of military leaders and is trying to pressure them to give him what he wants.
