TBT: On Anniversary of Lewinsky Scandal, Watch What Trump Had to Say in 1998
Wonder of wonders, irony of ironies.
In recognition of 20 years since the Monica Lewinsky scandal, have a look at this 1998 video of Hardball‘s Chris Matthews asking then-just-some-rich-guy Donald Trump for his thoughts on the incident.
Back then, Trump said that he believed then-President Bill Clinton “probably couldn’t do any worse” in how he handled allegations that he slept with Lewinsky.
“I think his little speech afterward was a disaster. It wasn’t the right tone, and I’m not sure he should’ve done it. And I’m not even sure that he shouldn’t have just gone in and taken the Fifth Amendment and said ‘Look, I don’t get along with this man [independent counsel Ken] Starr, he’s after me, he’s a Republican, he’s this, he’s that.”
“It’s a terrible thing for a president to take the Fifth Amendment, but he probably he should’ve done it,” Trump added. “It’s such an embarrassment to him. I mean I see him walking around, it’s like, a terrible embarrassment.”
