In a wide-ranging interview on Sunday, Texas Senator Ted Cruz warned Fox’s Eric Bolling that the IRS would misuse their powers in implementing Obamacare, and that the Obama administration was setting up the immigration reform package to fail in the House of Representatives.
“It is a manifestation of too much power in the federal government,” the tea party legislator said of the IRS, proposing a flat tax instead. “When the federal government has that much power in our individual lives, it’s an invitation to be abused.”
He predicted this would bleed over into the organization’s involvement in Obamacare, though he improperly assigned the IRS with Obamacare’s implementation, when in fact the organization will levee fines related to the program.
“Right now the IRS is creating the largest database in the country to implement Obamacare,” Cruz said in a widely-disputed claim, “and the intrusion into our personal lives, I think is unacceptable. The pattern we’ve seen is its not something we can trust will be administered in a fair way. It’s not something we can trust won’t be used in a partisan way.”
Cruz also spotted political machinations in the immigration reform bill currently being drafted in his legislative chamber.
“I would very much like to see common-sense immigration reform actually pass Congress,” Cruz said. “If we focus on areas of agreement, we can fix the broken immigration system. Unfortunately, what the Senate Democrats are doing is, they’re not trying to focus on areas of agreement, they’re focusing on areas of sharp partisan disagreement. The Obama White House wants a political issue more than they want to pass a bill. They want a partisan issue. They hope, I believe, that this bill will pass the Senate and then be voted down in the House, so they can campaign in 2014 and 2016. That’s cynical and I think it’s irresponsible.”
