Terry McAuliffe Hedges When Asked to Name a Democratic Party Leader

Terry McAuliffe, the governor of Virginia and a Clinton ally, could not really name anyone today who is leading the Democratic party right now.

On MTP Daily this afternoon, McAuliffe told Katy Tur, “I think there are many leaders of the Democratic Party.”

Tur said, “Give me a name, governor.”

McAuliffe did not provide her a specific name, but instead pointed to Democratic governors around the country leading their states (which would include himself, something Tur made a point of noting).

As he kept talking about governors needing to “lead the way” where D.C. is failing, Tur said, “I’m just confused… I can’t get one name from anybody about who is leading the Democratic Party right now.”

McAuliffe said he doesn’t think “there is one person today.”

This question has been posed to a few high-profile Democrats who have given different answers.
