Anti-tax lobbyist Grover Norquist has a powerful grip on Congress with a majority of Republican lawmakers signing his pledge to never raise taxes under any situation. In an interview Tuesday night, The Daily Show‘s Samantha Bee held Norquist’s feet to the fire over any scenario in which he would raise taxes.
“Is there a scenario in which you would be comfortable with someone raising taxes?” Bee pressed.
“No,” Norquist answered.
Bee went through an entire laundry list of potential science-fiction level nightmare propositions that would move him to raise taxes: war, natural disaster, “beard flu” and even the rising of the apes.
The answer was still “no.”
That’s when Bee was shocked to discover Norquist wrote the pledge when he was in the seventh grade.
“The entire federal government is paralyzed,” Bee said in a voiceover, “because of a document written by a 12 year-old in 1968.”
Inspired, she conducted a focus group of 12-year-olds to come up with a competing pledge for Democrats, but had trouble connecting with them, especially after one thought Bee was 53 years old. She decided they were too old, and went younger, getting a focus group of kindergartners to whip up plans that included snowball fights and robots.
