The Media ‘Should Be Laughing at Themselves’: Ben Stein Blasts ‘Vicious’ Trump Slams at WHCD
Economist and former Nixon speechwriter Ben Stein made a Sunday night appearance on CNN, where he made it clear that he really hated all the jabs thrown at Donald Trump over the president’s absence from the White House Correspondents Dinner.
Stein previously defended Trump’s decision not to attend the event, saying it would’ve just been another sparring match between the president and the press corps. Today, Stein told Ana Cabrera that he felt like vomiting as he watched The Daily Show‘s Hasan Minhaj make “villainous” quips about how Trump is the “liar-in-chief.”
Stein argued that since Trump continues to feed off of coverage from the “fake news” media, the press “should be laughing at themselves, not laughing at him.” Cabrera noted that the news media faced mockery as well last night, but Stein argued that the press continues to be “vicious” in their coverage, and last night was a reflection of that.
“They just don’t give the guy a break,” Stein said. “By the way, I think he’s totally right about the ‘fake news.’ So much of what is attacked about him is fake news.”
Stein said he’s not completely happy with Trump at the moment, but the media has become a “permanent attack machine” determined to thwart the president.
Trump mocked the dinner during his rally last night, saying the attendees were “consoling each other in a hotel ballroom” over his win.
