The Senator That Every Democrat REALLY Wanted As Nominee Visits Colbert to Slam Trump
Somewhere at the intersection of Sanders Drive and Clinton Lane exists a Democratic campaign that only exists in the Twilight Zone, one that unfortunately did not come to fruition for millions of Democratic voters in 2016: Warren Way.
Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren undoubtedly was one of the pack-favorite candidates in talks to seek the party nomination for President last summer and fall. The populist hero occupies the best, of sorts, from both the Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders campaigns: a strong, progressive, and seasoned female leader ready to take on our economic woes and hold the financial institutions accountable. The support for Warren was palpable; even Bill Maher indicated that a potential Warren candidacy could inspire him to donate on the level that he did for Obama in 2012.
But even as only a spectator for the 2016 race, Warren is a popular figure, able and willing to rile up the leftist base with even a single late night appearance, as demonstrated Wednesday on The Late Show. Even just the phrase “…so many people wanted you to run for President…” from Stephen Colbert invoked wild cheers from the crowd at the Ed Sullivan Theater.
And as Colbert attempted to draw a connection between Warren and the GOP frontrunner Donald Trump for their seemingly overlapping views on Wall Street taxing and enforcement, Warren pumped the brakes. “Let’s be real clear,” she noted. “Donald Trump is looking out for exactly one guy. And that guy’s name is Donald Trump.”
“He kept [his career] going by cheating and defrauding people,” Warren continued, perhaps burning through the talking points that she’s using against him in that Twilight Zone universe where she’s the leading Democratic nominee. Her sickest “burn” of the night, if you will, came with this fire-inspired criticism of Trump:
“When the economy is in this kind of trouble, calling on Donald Trump for help is like if your house is on fire, calling on an arsonist to come help out.”
