The View Blasts ‘Simple Thinker’ Trump Over Opioid Speech: ‘Build a Wall, Lock Em Up, Kill Them’

The View blasted President Donald Trump for his simplistic proposals to resolve the opioid epidemic that his roiling communities across America, after his speech in New Hampshire rolling out the administration’s response to the crisis.

After playing a clip of Trump railing against drug dealers and calling for the death penalty at a recent rally, Joy Behar laid into the president.

“He’s such a simple thinker,” she said. “His solution is build a wall, lock em up, kill them. He never understands what causes an opioid addiction, what makes people commit any kind of crime. He never goes beyond the superficial, he’s incapable of understanding anything that’s not right in front of him.”

Behar added that Trump “loves a dictator,” and that maybe the president is inspired by strongmen like Rodrigo Duterte, who has waged a bloody war of extrajudicial killings against drug dealers in the Philippines.

After Sara Haines remarked that much of opioid addiction starts with legal prescriptions, Sunny Hostin asked, “so what is [Trump] saying?”

“Should doctors now get the death penalty?” she asked. “There are doctors increasingly facing charges for patient overdoses.”

“But the suggestion somehow that that’s how you solve a crisis, just shows how backwards his thinking is, and shows that he doesn’t understand policy.

Meghan McCain tried to give Trump the benefit of the doubt, making a distinction between drug dealers and “kingpins like El Chapo or Pablo Escobar” — but conceded “I’m reaching here.”

“I think we need to have more compassion culturally in general for addicts, for this disease, for why people come to a place in their lives where they feel like that’s the only place they can go to,” she added.
