The View Hosts Call on Berkeley Students to Stop Bill Maher Boycott
The women of ABC’s The View on Tuesday said the University of California Berkeley students are misguided in trying to ban HBO Real Time host Bill Maher from speaking at the school’s commencement in December.
“Invite him and have your say,” said Rosie Perez. “Challenge him. Go out into the streets and cover the campus in protests.”
Rosie O’Donnell suggested that students who don’t don’t like Maher should consider making it clear by turning their backs to him during his speech.
Nicolle Wallace, the show’s Republican, said, “The history of Berkeley isn’t banning speech that offends you. The history of Berkeley is that that campus and those students have been on the front lines in the fight for free speech.”
“I’m hoping they change their mind,” said Whoopi Goldberg.
Maher made waves even among his liberal fan base for once again voicing his opposition to religion, Islam in particular, coloring it as an intolerant faith that is antithetical to liberalism.
A group of students at Berkeley have started a petition to have him banned from the commencement, calling him a “blatant bigot and racist.”
