The ladies of The View debated Larry Wilmore‘s routine from this weekend’s White House Correspondent’s Dinner, and they largely agreed with the criticisms that have come his way.
Even though the White House shrugged it off earlier today, various people have taken issue with how Wilmore decided to end it Saturday night by telling President Obama “you did it my n*gga.” On today’s panel, Sunny Hostin was particularly incensed by the joke, saying that it was “disrespectful” and “inappropriate” for Wilmore to use the n-word in the presence of America’s first black president.
Whoopi Goldberg took a different route with her critiques, saying that Wilmore mostly rehashed Obama’s jokes from earlier in the night while lacking any kind of solid delivery or punchline.
“If you can’t read the room, you shouldn’t be doing that gig,” Goldberg said. “I think there was five comics who could’ve done [the n-word joke] a lot better.”
Michelle Collins agreed that Chris Rock or a different comedian might’ve been able to make the joke work, but Goldberg and Hostin continued to go back and forth about whether the n-word could ever be “sanitized,” or if it could ever be used effectively to close out such a formal event.
