Yes, Pope Francis‘ first visit to the United States is a big deal, and for devout Catholics who live in or near the three major cities on the pontiff’s travel itinerary, any and all means were necessary to get close enough to witness the Holy Father in the flesh. But sleeping in a cemetery? Really?
As NBC Philadelphia reports, this is precisely what about 100 New Jersey residents did in Philadelphia on Friday night just outside of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Trinity in South Philadelphia. That’s right, they slept on the sacred grounds of a different denomination’s church.
According to Rev. Andres Codoñer, everyone there “[understands] that this place might not be the best place where to come. We know that we are sharing this Earth with those who preceded us.”
Even so, it’s the Pope! None of these silly dead Lutherans are going to care if a bunch of living Catholics shack up six feet above their final resting place.
