Earlier Wednesday morning, NBC News ran a story reporting that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had threatened to quit this past summer and called the president a “moron” during a meeting. This led to Tillerson to hold a press conference later in the day to claim he did not offer up his resignation. At the same time, he notably didn’t deny the reports of his presidential name-calling.
During his visit to Las Vegas today, President Donald Trump was asked about the report, something he had already tweeted about this morning. And, unsurprisingly, he hammered the news outlet while saying they fabricated the story.
“It was fake news,” POTUS exclaimed. “A totally phony story. NBC just made it up. They made it all up.”
Following Tillerson’s presser, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert delivered a statement specifically denying that the secretary of state labeled Trump a moron.
