On Tuesday night’s show, Stephen Colbert took on those stubborn liberals who still don’t support the drone program. But since its success hasn’t been convincing enough, Colbert found a more palatable reason for “tree-huggers” to get on board.
The drone program works, Colbert said, but unfortunately not everyone is quite so proud of the president’s program — “for instance, President Obama.” With that, he turned to Robert Gibbs, who said he was told, during his time as press secretary, not to even acknowledge the existence of the program.
But Colbert just didn’t understand why the administration would be ashamed of its “extrajudicial robo-assassin spree,” especially given that it even polls well. There are, however, those “liberal peace-humpers” who just don’t understand its success.
That might change, Colbert continued, because of the new tips al Qaeda has about how to avoid drones. One of those tips, hiding under trees, came from bin Laden’s own advice:
“I want the brothers in the Islamic Maghreb to know that planting trees helps the mujahedeen and gives them cover,” bin Laden writes in the missive. “Trees will give the mujahedeen the freedom to move around especially if the enemy sends spying aircrafts to the area.”
Finally a reason to get reluctant liberals on board: “Do you hear that, tree-huggers? Our drones program is encouraging reforestation.” Remember, “think locally, bomb globally.”
