Throwback Thursday: Paul Ryan Doesn’t Think We Should Rush Bills Through

Politics is a tough business. Sometimes, as a young congressman you say something, and then a few years later you find yourself saying the complete opposite thing. Thanks to the Internet, we are blessed with the ability to travel back in time and grab clips of politicians saying things that wholly contradict their current positions.

Today’s Throwback Thursday comes as Republicans try to jam their Obamacare replacement bill through the House, without giving lawmakers a chance to read the legislation or the Congressional Budget Office the chance to determine its costs.

In the above clip, a young Paul Ryan extols the virtues of legislative patience, arguing against then-President Barack Obama’s attempts to push through a health care bill.

Per 2009 Ryan:

I don’t think we should pass bills that we haven’t read, that we don’t know what they cost. And if you rush this thing through before anybody even knows what it is, that’s not good democracy, that’s not doing our work for our constituents.

We shouldn’t rush this thing through just to rush it through for some artificial deadline. Let’s get this thing done right.

As CNN’s John King asks, “has that Paul Ryan met Speaker Paul Ryan?”

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi has also been at the forefront of calling out recent GOP health care hypocrisy, seizing on Ryan’s comments from 2009 to attack the proposed bill in a deluge of tweets and statements.

As she said on Tuesday, “the American people have a right to know the full consequences of Trumpcare before their representatives vote on it.”

What a country.
