Tom Hanks on Getting White House Press Corps an Espresso Machine: ‘Those Poor Bastards Need Coffee’

You may remember a while ago that Tom Hanks sent the White House press corps an espresso machine. This is not the first time he’s done so, and last night he told Stephen Colbert why he does it:

“Those poor bastards need coffee.”

Colbert brought up the note Hanks sent that said, “Keep up the good fight for Truth, Justice, and the American Way. Especially for the Truth part.”

He did add to Hanks that President Trump is probably keeping reporters awake enough anyway. Hanks joked that there’s probably “a lot of spit coffee on people’s laps,” given what’s happening on a daily basis.

The A-lister recalled how when he visited the White House a long time ago and how there were a few people from news outlets in the room, even though nothing was happening. And when he asked them why they’re there, someone responded, “In case of nuclear war.”

So he decided they could use a new espresso machine.

During the interview Colbert also had to ask him about how he recently went yachting with Bruce Springsteen, Oprah Winfrey, and Barack and Michelle Obama.
