During the Hardball American University town hall tonight, a student asked Senator Chris Murphy whether he agrees with the people labeling President Trump as a fascist.
There was a bit of an awkward moment when Chris Matthews pushed back a bit and asked her for examples of what would make people think Trump’s a fascist. After a few moments, she talked about Trump “trying to divide us” in ways similar to fascist leaders.
Murphy immediately responded, “I don’t know yet that I’m ready to go to that word.”
He went on to say that stifling dissent and “setting one group of people against each other” are really troubling, adding that conduct like this can be a “slippery slope” to a bad place.
The next question Murphy received was from a student who asked him if he’s concerned about the president’s “diplomacy by tweet.”
