On Tuesday night, Trevor Noah went after Republicans for their handling of the government shutdown.
The Daily Show host acknowledged the media’s obsession with determining the “winners and losers” of the shutdown, and while he made arguments as to why the Democrats or the Republicans won or lost, he declared that the biggest losers were the DREAMers, aka the DACA recipients whose program ends March 5th.
“They came away from this shutdown worse off than before,” Noah said. “Before it all became about winning or losing, even Republicans believed that DACA kids deserved a chance in the U.S.”
He then played clips of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Speaker Paul Ryan, and President Trump all speaking favorably of resolving the DACA issue.
“But once the shutdown became about scoring political points, suddenly Republican leaders turned these people from DREAMers to ‘illegals,’ Noah continued.
Noah then played clips of McConnell and Vice President Mike Pence slamming Democrats for shutting the government down over “illegal immigration.”
“If you’re a DREAMer, it’s not completely unexpected Republicans would turn on you,” Noah added.
He also criticized Democrats for promising they wouldn’t “leave” without fixing DACA and used used House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chris Van Hollen as examples.
“Here’s the thing, Democrats, I believe you’re trying to help the DREAMers but you may be setting unrealistic expectations when you know you don’t have power and you keep making promises only to back down,” Noah said. “I’m not going to lie, doesn’t make you look great.”
