Trey Gowdy Blasts Trump Over Russia ‘Equivocation’: Advisers May Have to ‘Reevaluate’ Staying in Administration
Rep. Trey Godwy (R-SC) on Fox News Sunday today unleashed on President Donald Trump over his wishy-washy and changing positions on the intelligence regarding Russian interference and whether there was any hacking at all.
Brett Baier, filling in for Chris Wallace, asked Gowdy about the op-ed from fellow intel committee member Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX) that said the President is being manipulated by Vladimir Putin. Gowdy said he would defer to Hurd on manipulation, given Hurd’s experience with the CIA. But Gowdy had his own choice words for the President’s takes.
“The President has access to every bit of evidence, even more than those of who serve on House intel,” he said. “He has access to Pompeo and Dan Coats and Nikki Haley… the evidence is overwhelming. It can be proven beyond any evidentiary burden that Russia is not our friend and they tried to attack us in 2016.”
In fact, he says, it is so overwhelming that if President Trump can’t get on the same page as the intelligence community regarding Russia, then top advisers and intel chiefs like Mike Pompeo, Dan Coats, and Nikki Haley should consider whether they should even remain in the administration at alL.
“The President either needs to rely on the people that he has chosen to advise him, or those advisers need to reevaluate whether or not they can serve in this administration,” said Gowdy. “The disconnect cannot continue. The evidence is overwhelming and the president needs to say that and act like it.”
Host Baier said that Trump “eventually said it’ through the week, and asked Gowdy why there was any hesitation in the first place.
“I don’t know, I watched the press conference. It wasn’t just that line. The president missed, I think, a really good opportunity to distinguish the United States from any other country but especially from Russia,” he said.
“I’m glad he corrected it,” Gowdy said. “But when you’re the leader of the free world, every syllable matters, and you really shouldn’t be having to correct it when you’re the leader of the free world.”
