Trump Goes on Loony Rant About Immigration Judges: ‘Go to the Barber Shop, Grab Somebody, Make Him a Judge’

During a White House briefing Tuesday, President Donald Trump again claimed he’s been told an additional 5,000 judges will be needed to handle immigration cases, and suggested they’d be chosen at random, perhaps within barber shops.

“How do you choose 5,000 judges?” he asked. “Can you imagine the corruption, just from a normal standpoint? Just common sense. Can you imagine the corruption? Go to the barber shop, grab somebody, make him a judge. Everybody’s being made a judge.”

Trump has been repeating the baseless number since a South Carolina where he spoke Monday evening, stating that he was informed in a meeting that the thousands of judges were needed; however, it remains unclear who said that to him.

Washington Post fact check pointed out that as of mid-April, the U.S. only had 334 judges working on immigration, and the country’s judicial branch has less than 1,300 federal judges in total. The Post also cited an official from the National Association of Immigration Judges who believes 365 more judges would need to be appointed to handle the backlog of cases.

Yet Trump remains committed to his narrative.

“It’s crazy,” he said. “Other countries, it’s called, ‘I’m sorry, you can’t come in, you have to leave.’ This one, we have judges. If they step on our land we have judges. It’s insane.”
