Trump on DACA: No Amnesty, but ‘We’re Looking at Allowing People to Stay Here’

During an impromptu press conference in Florida, President Trump hit back at critics and said his agreement with Congressional Democrats did not amount to amnesty for DACA recipients.

Earlier today, Trump said his plan for a border wall would come “later,” and he also suggested that it would actually be a renovation or expansion on already-existing border security measures. As he spoke to reporters later on in Fort Myers, Trump spoke about the need for “extreme border security” while saying he wouldn’t brook obstruction for his border wall.

“We’re not looking at citizenship,” Trump said. “We’re not looking at amnesty. We’re looking at allowing people to stay here.”

Trump continued to say Paul Ryan and the GOP leadership are on board with this as he continued to hint at protections for people who arrived in America at an age too young to be held responsible. Eventually, Trump went back to the wall by saying “If I don’t get the wall, then we will become the obstructionists.”

During this presser, Trump was asked to clarify the nature of his deal with Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, and he also faced questions about Steve King and other supporters who are clobbering the president for going against his political promises.
