Trump on Potential Repercussions to Saudi Arabia Over Khashoggi: There Are ‘Very Powerful’ Things We Could Do

During his Oval Office meeting with freed pastor Andrew Brunson, President Donald Trump faced a number of questions about the disappearance and likely killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

When asked about the timing of Pastor Brunson’s release from Turkey following the disappearance of Khashoggi, the President said it’s a “total coincidence.”

In a preview of his 60 Minutes interview out today, Trump said there could be serious potential consequences if it’s confirmed that Saudi Arabia killed Khashoggi. He talked again in the Oval Office about the arms deal and said “we’d be punishing ourselves” by blocking it.

“There are other things we can do that are very very powerful, very strong,” he added.

When one reporter pressed for an example of something the U.S. could do, Trump said there are “many things we could do” before offering Senator James Lankford a chance to weigh in. Lankford said the U.S. should wait to find out what happened first before discussing potential punitive action.
