Trump: Pelosi’s ‘Crumbs’ Comment on Tax Reform Resembles Hillary’s ‘Deplorables’
President Donald Trump just can’t let go of Hillary Clinton.
In his address at the annual Republican winter retreat in White Sulphur Springs, WV, Trump talked about tax cuts for the middle class and slammed Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi for calling bonuses being doled out by companies “crumbs.”
“In terms of the bonus that corporate America received versus the crumbs that they are giving workers to kind of put the schmooze on is so pathetic. It’s so pathetic,” Pelosi said.
“That was a bad — that could be, like, deplorable. Does that make sense, deplorable and crumbs? Those two words, they seem to have a resemblance,” Trump said. “I hope it has the same meaning. But she called it crumbs. When people are getting $2,000 and $3,000 and $1,000. That’s not crumbs. That’s a lot of money.”
“Deplorables” refers to a comment Clinton made about Trump’s supporter base during the 2016 election, on which she said: “you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic—you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.”
Trump has harped on the “deplorables” comment in other speeches as well, claiming in December that “we’re proud to be the deplorables” and in another speech, saying that Trump supporters are “all deplorables”. He even congratulated the deplorables on the anniversary of his election win in November.
