Trump Rebukes GOP Senator on Guns: ‘That’s Because You’re Afraid of the NRA’
During President Donald Trump’s open doors meeting with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle regarding gun control, he advised Republicans to stop being “petrified” and “afraid” of the NRA.
With the bipartisan discussing aimed at finding common ground to solve America’s gun violence issues, Trump discussed the problems the gun lobby plays when passing policy, as their power of endorsement and their checkbook often plays major roles in elections.
“We’re all going to lead. We are going to get this done in a bipartisan manner. I’m not worried about 60 votes. I really believe that 60 votes, 60% meaning, should be so easy. Should be 100%,” said
Democrat Senator Chris Murphy then jumped-in and said Trump is underestimating “the power of the gun lobby.”
Trump responded to the Democrat with the following statement slamming Republicans for their fear of losing the NRA endorsement:
“They do have great power, I agree with that. They have great power over you people, they have less people over me. I don’t need it… We have to do what’s right. When it comes to mental health and other issues, I said, ‘We have to do what’s right.’ I’m telling you, I think they’re there. I think they’re there. Some of you people are petrified of the NRA. You can’t be petrified. They want to do what’s right.”
Additionally, Trump called out Republican Senator Pat Toomey specifically for being “afraid of the NRA” after he admitted to not addressing age restriction issues in a bill.
“It doesn’t make sense that I have to wait till I’m 21 to get a handgun, but I can get this weapon at 18,” Trump said. So I was just curious as to what you did in your bill?”
“We didn’t address it, Mr. President,” Toomey replied — to which Trump shot back, “You know why? ‘Cause you’re afraid of the NRA.”
