Trump Won’t Deny Campaign Was in Contact With Russia: ‘Well, I Had Nothing to Do With It’
When asked during a Thursday press conference to categorically deny that any of his campaign staffers contacted the Russian government during the 2016 election, President Donald Trump declined, only denying his own involvement.
“I want to get you to clarify this very important point. Can you say definitively that nobody on your campaign had any contacts with the Russians during the campaign?” asked ABC’s Jonathan Karl. “And on the leaks, is it fake news or are these real leaks?”
Trump gave a long response to the second question, going off on several tangents and attacking CNN. When Trump went to move on to another question, Karl interrupted and asked his first question again.
“The first part of my question, the contacts, can you definitively say that nobody on your campaign…” Karl began.
“Well I had nothing to do with it,” Trump said, putting his emphasis on the second word. “I have nothing to do with Russia. I told you, I have no deals there, I have no anything.”
