Trump Won’t Overrule Whitaker if He Quashes Mueller Probe: ‘I Would Not Get Involved’
President Donald Trump is assuring he will not take action if Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker decides to curtail Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s investigation.
“It’s going to be up to him,” Trump told Fox News Sunday‘s Chris Wallace, praising his appointee. “I think he’s very well aware politically. I think he’s astute politically. He’s a very smart person. A very respected person. He’s going to do what’s right. I really believe he’s going to do what’s right.”
Pushed by Wallace to say whether he’d overrule Whitaker if he attempted to stop the Mueller probe, Trump said, “I would not get involved.”
Despite controversy and criticism over the commander in chief’s choice of Whitaker for the temporary role, Trump claims he was previously unaware of the acting attorney general’s expressed disdain for Mueller’s work.
“I did not know that,” Trump said. “I did not know he took views on the Mueller investigation as such.”
The president argued that Whitaker’s bashing of the probe was legitimate anyway, contending that while he doesn’t “think it will have any impact and that “he’s right.”
“What do you do when a person’s right? There is no collusion. He happened to be right. I mean, he said it. So if he said there is collusion, I’m supposed to be taking somebody that says there is? Because then I wouldn’t take him for two reasons, but the number one reason is the fact that he would have been wrong.”
