Tucker Carlson Uses Clip of Lauer Grilling O’Reilly To Hit NBC, Then Ignores O’Reilly Allegations
On Wednesday night, Tucker Carlson addressed the firing of longtime NBC Today Show anchor Matt Lauer, but opened a panel discussion with a very peculiar clip.
The clip was from a September interview Lauer did with fired Fox News host Bill O’Reilly.
“Over the last six months since your firing, have you done some soul-searching?” Lauer asked O’Reilly. “Have you done some self-reflection? And have you looked at the way you’ve treated women that you think now- or think about differently now than you did at the time?”
After the clip ended, Carlson made no mention of his former colleague, the allegations of sexual harassment that were made against them, as well as the $32 million settlement he made to former Fox News legal analyst Lis Wiehl.
Instead, Carlson questioned NBC’s credibility.
“Isn’t NBC’s credibility on these things devalued by the fact that they held and prevented the airing of that Harvey Weinstein piece?” Carlson asked his panel.
The Hill‘s media reporter Joe Concha (a Mediaite alum) responded by saying the public can either accept the account the Vanity Fair reporters who have been working on their exposé of Lauer for months or NBC’s claim that they only received a complaint about Lauer on Monday — which, he added, was “very hard to believe.”
“You have to go back to Ronan Farrow‘s piece in October that was squelched,” Concha said. “He had the goods. He had audiotape of an NYPD sting operation and witness testimony- testimony from women who wanted to come forward. And they said, ‘Sorry, you don’t have enough.'”
Carlson then insisted that media outlets who are caught in such controversies “need to have some level of transparency,” which was apparently missing from his own network when they renegotiated O’Reilly’s contract after he made that giant settlement. The network has since denied knowing the damning contents of that settlement when they redrafted O’Reilly contract.
