Tuesday Ratings: Erin Burnett Has Her Lowest Ratings Ever At 7PM

By pulling in an estimated 67,000 viewers at 7 p.m. in the 25-54 year-old demo, Erin Burnett registered an all-time ratings low for her show, which debuted earlier this month. Burnett finished fourth in the time slot, her ratings more than doubled by HLN’s Jane Velez-Mitchell, who attracted 153,000. Some silver lining for Burnett? Her 11 p.m. repeat brought in 143,000 viewers, good for third in the time slot (taking some revenge on HLN, which finished fourth) and beating first runs of Wolf Blitzer and John King on the CNN slate. Strangely, on Monday, Burnett’s first-run was stronger and her repeat was the lowest-rated show of the night. On Tuesday, the opposite was true. And, in a nutshell, we give you the strange world of cable news ratings.

To be fair, and to provide some context to the mercurial nature of cable news ratings, on Monday night Burnett pulled the second highest ratings on the network with 174,000 viewers, and she is up from her John King U.S.A lead-in by double-digits in both P2+ (+16%) and P25-54 (+19%).

More fun with the numbers:

  • Velez-Mitchell’s audience in the demo was the second-highest on HLN all night. Nancy Grace led all HLN shows with 168,000 at 8 p.m.
  • Anderson Cooper and Grace tied for third at 8 p.m., with each attracting 168,000 viewers. Bill O’Reilly, the Harlem Globetrotters of ratings, won the 8 p.m. slot by a wide margin. In fact, his viewership outpaced Cooper, Grace, and Ed Schultz combined.
  • A day after dipping to 212,000 viewers in the demo, Greta Van Susteren surged, drawing 421,000 on Tuesday night at 10 p.m.
  • FOX finished first and MSNBC finished second in every time slot. HLN took early third-place wins at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 7 p.m., while CNN came on later in the night, taking the bronze at 9 p.m., 10 p.m., and 11 p.m.
