Ukrainian President: World Should React to MH17 as It Did to 9/11
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that the downed flight MH17 was an international tragedy that merited the same response as previous plane-related terrorist attacks, from 9/11 to the Lockerbie bombing, and that the conflict that had formerly been contained within Ukraine was now a global one.
“I don’t see any differences from their tragedy of 9/11, from the tragedy of Lockerbie, and from the tragedy of the Ukrainian sky,” Poroshenko said, just after President Barack Obama’s remarks. “At this tragedy, we should demonstrate the same way of reaction.”
“This is a danger for the whole world,” he continued. “Let’s not demonstrate that we are talking about some conflict inside Ukraine. Ukrainian nation now are united. We don’t have any conflict inside Ukrainian nation. And this is, again, the danger for the global security, and the global world should find out a right answer to these challenges.”
Just before Obama’s remarks, Poroshenko had instructed the international community to label the fighters in eastern Ukraine terrorists, not separatists.
