UN Ambassador Power: ‘Everything Suggests’ Putin Is After Eastern Ukraine
UN Ambassador Samantha Power told ABC News’ George Stephanopolous Sunday morning that the recent outbreaks of fighting in eastern Ukraine bore the tell tale sings of coordinated Russian involvement, actions that could scuttle peace talks before they even begin.
“It has all the tell-tale signs of what we saw in Crimea,” Power said of various separatist groups that have attempted to claim city centers in eastern Ukraine. “It’s professional, it’s coordinated, there’s nothing grassroots-seeming about it. The forces are doing in each of the six or seven cities that they’ve been active in, exactly same thing. So certainly it bears the tell-tale signs of Moscow’s involvement.”
Stephanopoulos asked if Power believed Putin was after eastern Ukraine.
“The actions that he has undertaken certainly give credence to that idea,” Power said. “But I will say, in the conversations that we have had, they keep insisting, ‘That’s not what we want.’ But everything that they’re doing suggests the opposite.”
