Vice Reporter Smokes Weed During Interview with Uruguay President

Late last year, Uruguay became the first country in the world to fully legalize marijuana. To highlight this fact, Vice reporter Krishna Andavolu traveled to that country and interviewed the 78-year-old president of Uruguay, José Mujica, while smoking a joint. That moment — something you’re probably not going to see on CNN — is the highlight of the new trailer for Vice’s upcoming report on the country, Weediquette: The Cannabis Republic of Uruguay.

“I’m smoking weed with the president of Uruguay at his farm outside of Montevideo,” Andavolu says in the video teaser, before explaining that the country is currently trying to figure out the legalization process.

“If you need to take drugs to be free, then you’re screwed,” Mujica tells the reporter. Pointing to his head, he adds, “Freedom is here. Otherwise is doesn’t exist.”
