The political news of the week is Senator Ted Cruz and his 21-hour non-filibuster of a bill that would fund the government, but de-fund Obamacare, and while Cruz’s Sillibuster™ yielded many absurd, clip-worthy moments, there is one piece of video that could be especially useful to his 2016 opponents. On Fox News Sunday, Cruz told Chris Wallace that “a vote for cloture is a vote for ObamaCare,” yet Wednesday’s cloture vote on the measure Cruz was Sillibustering was not 99 to 1.
“If the majority’s going to run the minority over with a train, the minority has the ability to stop them,” Cruz told Wallace on Sunday of the measure to de-fund Obamacare. “Any vote for cloture, any vote to allow Harry Reid to add funding for Obamacare with just a fifty-one vote threshold—a vote for cloture is a vote for ObamaCare.”
At the time, Wallace challenged that absurd construction, that a vote to advance the law that de-funds Obamacare would be a vote in favor of Obamacare, but as many have noted, when all was said and said, Cruz ended up voting for cloture along with everyone else.
His 2016 presidential opponents will surely cut ads featuring his recitation of Green Eggs and Ham, and his Darth Vader impression, and maybe even his invocation of the Nazis, but here’s the grandaddy of them all. From Fox News Sunday and C-Span 2, here’s Ted Cruz saying “a vote for cloture is a vote for ObamaCare,” and then voting for cloture on the bill:
